I am 52 yrs old also and gave up smoking 9 weeks ago, i had an awful cough and wheezing and really thought that it was too late and even giving up wouldnt make me any better, well thankfully i was wrong i can almost run up hill and my cough has gone completely, even ater only 9 weeks, i feel loads better and my skin is glowing, It is very hard to stop smoking but as you say not being able to breath easily is one of the most frightening things.
hope we can both keep it up

There will be opportunities to help others here on Q&A and in your life , encourage them as they arise it is always the very best decision they can make for their own health and for their family. I have been smoke free for over 30 years, yes it was difficult, it is an addiction, but I was successful after many attempts, I am free, and have no desire to ever smoke again thanks be to God.
