Thanks to those whove answered so far. I was a ware that in places in Singapore, HK, Japan, Shanghai that rental prices are very similar to European (where I live) prices. I also know that other parts of Asia have lower rental prices. From internet searches ive found hotel/apartments in the Philippines, Thailand for about under 400usd a month.
So I wondered if I could find budget but clean rentals for 200(two hundred)usd a month. I was assuming that a local person who is middle class would pay 100to150usd a month for a 3star place, so the price for I as a foreigner being 200usd a month would be a good price.
It seems the basal monthly rental around the world, Ive also looked in Mexico, is 400usd a month. Which seems high when taking into account local middle class salaries
Amanda, your apartment is beautiful. How much does it cost to buy a similar apartment in Shanghai

Service apartment USD200 a month is almost impossible in Shanghai. R you sure USD200 or USD2000 a month?
Honestly, USD200 can only possibly for a very small unit with very old and poor furnitures in it. Plus, 4-6 is short term rent, our standard lease period is at least a year. I'm sure you won't take it.
USD400, you can find a nice new service apartment here in Shanghai for short term lease. I own one but I leased it out to a tenant already, but I mean, in the same building, you still get chance to find one.
Here are some pictures of my service apartment building and rooms on this web:

I stayed in an apartment in Bangkok for about $240 a month. It's called Ruen Indra. Address: 10 Arun Amarin, Bangkok Noi, Bangkok. Has it's own internet and wireless internet for 400 baht. There's hot water, shower, toilet, 2 sinks, king sized bed, and fridge. You can get BBC News, National Geographic Channel, and some other satellite TV if you want to pay extra for a TV in your room. You pay for water and electricity. They also have room service and laundry service and a small restaurant with, IMO, the best food in Bangkok.

Which country are you staying? it's almost impossible to rent a room with only USD200 in Hong Kong or Japan. USD1300 a month may do.
A service aparment of a hotel in downtown would be my choice. neat and better services are some of the reasons. but the rent is higher.

Thailand has homestay program where you live with the country folks. This will cost about 300USD also, with full board and meals. You may want to consider with very basic amenities and out of the cities locations.
