I am an 18 year old, fairly active female who has been getting chest pains and heart palputations for about 6 months. I have recently had blood taken and am awaiting the resluts but am worried. I have also been getting night sweats and feeling light headed and really tired. When i went to the doctor he put me on beta blockers to try and reduce the speed of my heart beat but its still far too fast and im concerned. Does anyone have any ideas what might be wrong?
Thanks

I was recently rushed to the ER when the same thing happened to me, as it does on and off every day. I have Premature Atrial Contractions (PACs) which is an electrical thing. It is not life threatening, but basically my heart is not firing at the right time, like a car whose timing is off. I was on a Holter Monitor and have to see a cardiologist for further testing. I am very nervous about all this which is not helping! So I know just how you feel. It is good that you are seeing docs and being treated, maybe you will just need different meds. I read mitral valve prolapse is common in younger people and can cause these symptoms. I am only 34 with no family history of heart probs, and am scared too, so you are not alone. Im sure the docs told you already but watch your caffeine intake and try to find ways to control stress (as if being a young person with heart issues helps??!!)Hang in there and trust your docs, I feel your pain!

Now that everyone has blown you off as an "anxious female" listen to me. You need to see a cardiologist who will refer you to an Electrophysiologist. I'm pretty certain that your heart is healthy, what you're experiencing sounds like an electrical issue in your heart, that's why it's beating too fast which will absolutely make you feel dizzy and sweaty and give you chest pain. A cardiologist should have you wear a holter monitor, which would monitor your heart for 24 - 72 hours and record every single heart beat in that time. You might also be sent to electrophysiology studies, in which a doctor will try to get your heart to beat too fast so they can identify the source and treat it. This is not an uncommon condition in young people. All in all, you will be fine, just please go to a cardiologist and get the proper treatment. Can anxiety cause these symptoms? Absolutely, but you should be treated medically first and not written off as just too stressed. Good luck.

It is good that you have been to see the doctor, and I hope the results point to something that is easily treatable. Yes, it could be a heart problem, but then the night sweats are not really consistent with that. It could be that you have another condition that is putting a lot of stress on your body, and that that condition needs to be treated so that your heart will calm down.

I hope the doctor is able to figure out what is going on and that you feel better soon.

It really isn't possible to make a diagnosis. At it's simplest it could be an anxiety disorder. In any case you should make a conscious effort to calm down while awaiting your test results.
Good luck

Don't worry. thyroid over activity could cause a fast heart beat. You might consider a good shrink to deal with anxiety

Relax! This happens to a lot of people! All this means is you've just seen your parents having sex. It'll be fine. Try to stay away from the their home for 2 to 6 weeks.
