My doctor prescribed Medrol for me (which I've never taken before) for asthma. Well, Prednisone does NOT work for me (not even remotely), and I get awful side effects from heart palpitations to a constantly flushed red face, severe heartburn, etc., etc., etc. I was put on Decadron in the ER last month and that worked in 2 days without any of the side effects! I asked the doctor to prescribe Decadron (I explained all my problems with the prednisone), yet he went ahead and called in Medrol, which, after reading about it online, is apparently almost the exact same thing. Is that true? Are Medrol and Prednisone very similar? Is there a high likelihood of me having the same side effects with Medrol as with the Prednisone? Thank you very much!

P.S. Even just reading the generics makes me think that they're so similar! Prednisone vs. Methylprednisolone

tlbrown42000, your answer was rude, stupid, and of no help whatsoever. It's good to know that there are "health care providers" out there with such spectacular bedside manner as you...

They are *almost* the same; that being said, sometimes people who are allergic to Penicillin (for example), may be fine with Amoxicillin . Even the littlest differences in medications can make a huge difference! Just be sure to watch closely for any of the reactions that you described. If they are severe, go into the hospital... If they are tolerable and just "bothersome," call your doctor during office hours, as soon as possible. The reason why Decadron isn't prescribed as a first choice (usually) is because it's extremely potent. In fact, it's the second most potent corticosteroid, only to Betamethasone. To give you an idea, Decadron has a potency of 28, whereas Prednisone has a potency of 4, and Medrol has about a 4.7.

I hope this helped!!! :-) Feel better!

Prednisone Vs Methylprednisolone

As you can see from the following, both Prednisone and Medrol are basically the same. Also, for the rude doctor, giving you a shot is no more effective than having you take the drug orally. Your doctor should have prescribed the drug that worked, not an equivalent of prednisone. Hope this helps a little. Good luck.

Both drugs are corticosteroids with essentially the same effects and side effects.
Methylprednisolone is Medrol. It is available as an oral tablet. Methylprednisolone is also available as a parenteral preparation meaning it can be used intramuscularly or, more commonly intravenously. Prednisone is given orally.

In terms of equivalence, prednisolone 4 mgs= prednisone 5 mgs.
Basically, there are no significant differences in effects and side-effects.

In a paper published in the Cleveland Clinic Quarterly May 2002, Dr. Charles Emerman outlined the evidence and found there was no true benefit of intravenous methylprednisolone over oral prednisone in the treatment of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

In another paper, evaluating the differences between the two drugs in the treatment of multiple sclerosis, there were no significant differences

I've taken prednisone every day for 10 years (for asthma too), I am in a yahoo group that most everyone takes it daily. I've heard that some people that are sensitive to prednisone, can actually tolerate medrol better. The dosing is also different, you could probably find the conversion online, but I'm sure your doctor that prescribed the medrol already did it for you.

all 3 drugs are steroids so it's difficult to say why the decadron didn't cause the side effects the prednisone did. It is also difficult to understand why he just didn't prescribe the decadron (unless there are issue around the drugs your health insurance allows).
Anyway, try it for a couple of days if it causes problems go back and throw a hissy fit

They are similar drugs, in the same class and the same action, but, you should talk to your pharmacist, he or she would be the one to answer those questions for you. Use that professional adivce. It sounds as if the Dr. you have didn't listen to the side effects or your issue with taking the pednisone.

As a healthcare provider I can tell you that Decadron, medrol, prednisone and quite a few others are ALL corticosteroids....all the same thing....just some in different strengths. If you can tollerate one, you can tollerate them all. That's why your doctor did what he did...which by the way was the correct medical standard for asthma. Take your medication and quit working yourself up to another asthma attack. I would have given you Decadron by injection and still ordered a Medrol Dose Pack. Are you on Advair or Asmanex or some simular asthma medication? (They have corticosteriod in them too.) So relax, take your medication.
