I thought that the stew would turn out thicker, so I could serve it on a plate, but it is more soupy. So, I need to serve it in a bowl. Where do I put the mashed potatoes? Does it look weird to have the soup in a bowl and a side plate with the potatoes? Please advise! Thanks!!!

Ok, so what should I serve with the stew if not mashed potatoes? Just bread since the stew already has veggies and meat?

They have bread bowls you could make or buy and put the stew in it.

Hope you had a great dinner. Your stew should have contained not only beef, but some potatoes, and carrots (celery and onion possible). A nice homemade bread, or biscuits go well with stew. If you think you need something else, you can serve a big green salad or a fruit salad.
Oh, BTW, if your stew turns out soupy again, you can thicken it with a little cornstarch mixed in some of the broth. Add the combination and cook a few minutes to thicken and get rid of the raw taste.

If you still have time, keep cooking the stew over a low flame; it'll get thicker...or you can mix some cornstarch w/water and then stir it into the stew to make the sauce thicker - it won't change the flavor!
That way you can serve it on a plate with the mashed potatoes.

when making stew you add potatoes with the carrots, onions and stewing meat. Since you forgot that part, you can always boil the (peeled and cubed) potatoes ...then add the boiled drained potatoes to the pot of stew, the potatoes will thicken the stew up some. Combine them carefully inthe stew.
Or
Add a bit of Bisto with water to thicken the gravy (water) in the pot. so it won't be too soupy*
Next Time......coat the meat with flour, shake off excess, then.brown the stew meat,in a bit of oil... add onions, carrots and peeled/cut potatoes...salt/pepper to taste, squirt or two of HP Sauce or A1 Sauce....let simmer until meat and potatoes are cooked through.. The flour at the beginning along with the potatoes Thicken the juices* ENjoY* Hope you can do what I said above to make your lovely stew more enjoyable*

You can thicken your stew. You can use either tapioca or corn starch depending on what you have neither change the flavor it just thickens the broth I prefer quick tapioca about 2 tablespoons to a pot of stew gives it a nice thickness if you want it thicker you can use a bit more. Put it in about 20 minutes to the time you want to serve it unless you are using a slow cooker then you need to put it in about an hour before done

Turn your stew into Shepard's pie by putting the stew in a casserole dish and putting the mashed potatoes on top in a layer then bake till the top is brown and bubbly.

You could pour the beef stew over the mashed potatoes and serve it on a plate that way.

have you tried thickening the stew, with a little flour or corn starch? you can take 2-3 tbs more or less depending on how big the stew is..and mix it up in a little cup it will look like runny paste and put it in the stew.. It will not change the flavor it will chg the color slightly. or you could not make gravy and use the stew as the gravy..

I would recommend thickening the stew. Mix two tablespoons of corn starch (use flour if you don't have corn starch) in one quarter cup of cold water. Mix until there are no lumps. Stir into the hot stew. Bring the stew up near a boil. Repeat the process until the stew is thick enough. Remember to get the stew up to temp. Starch thickeners will not reach full potential until they come to a boil. Ensure you let the stew simmer for at least 15 minutes to cook out any raw starch flavor.

Just thicken it up with some flour and water, or gravy powder.
If you have yet to mash the spuds, dice them and add to stew.
I will often put left over stew in a bowl and top with mashed spuds, my own version of a Shepherd's Pie

Mix some of the mashed potatoes in with the "soupy" beef stew -- it will thicken it to the consistency you desire. Problem solved!
