I ordered a curry dish at a fancy thai restaurant and they offer the same dish in 3 different types of curry. i ordered the yellow curry dish and it comes with a big bowl of a saucy yellow liquid with chicken and some potatoes inside of it along with a side of white rice. My question is am i supposed to enjoy the dish as a soup or am i just supposed to sparingly use the sauce over the white rice.

Typically, in a Thai restaurant there are 3 different types of curry: Red, Green and Yellow

Yellow (as you mention): potatoes, meat preference in a mild yellow liquid.
Red: bamboo shoots, meat preference in a spicy red liquid.
Green: thai eggplants, meat preference in a mild spicy green liquid.

If it is served in a bowl, it is obviously a soup. If it is served on a plate, it is entree.

In your case, it is a soup :)

Either way, depends on personal preference. You can even get away with adding the rice to the curry. I am more familiar with the red and green Thai curries often served with Thai noodles or those I get at a local Asian grocer. Have learned to "cook Thai" thanks to a co-worker and a basic cookbook as well as the internet. Thai cookery is generally a lot spicier than Noo Yokkers, Californians and Nevadans grew up with, but the flavor is rewarding to the adventurous tongue.

It is acceptable either way, but generally over the rice. The rice is there to cut the heat. If it is to hot, eat more rice with it. And, the yellow liquid is coconut milk and, well, curry. I like a Thai beer with my curry also. Tsing Ta is a good one.

A bit of both is customary. You can put a lot on the rice if you like it. Eat it how ever you want to and no one will look at you funny.
Also green chicken curry is a must try. and beef matsuman curry if they have it

curry in asian culture meaning of a lot of gravy. use that curry/gravy over rice and enjoy!! not soup. soup always look watery. try red curry and tom yum goong (if you eat shrimp) soup and beef salad (yum nua) next time.
