The Indian word for tea is CHAI. The Indian word for spice is MASALA. So in India, MASALA CHAI is spiced tea. It is essentially milky black tea (usually assam or darjeeling flavored with spices (chai masala). You can make chai masala yourself or buy it at any Indian grocery store.
CHAI MASALA (makes about 3 tablespoons)
1 black cardamom pod
Seeds from 25 green cardamom pods
4 cloves
1/2 tea spoon fennel seeds
1/4 teaspoon black peppercorns
1/4 teaspoon carom seeds (ajwain) - Optional
1 tea spoon dried, ground ginger powder
1 tea spoon ground cinnamon powder
Grind all the ingredients in a spice grinder until fine. Remove into a glass bottle & store in cool, dark place. This blend stays fresh for about 6 months.

Another word for indian spice tea is 'chai'. The word 'chai' is introduced from the indian language. I also love indian spice tea (chai), they taste the best!!! Below is the recipe for making a indian spice tea:
What You Require:
Equal Amounts of the Following Spices.
Ground Black Pepper
Ground Cinnamon
Ground Cloves
Ground Cardamon Seeds
Ginger Powder
What You Do:
Mix the spices in a spice mill or mortar and pestle to form a fine, uniform powder.
Store in a glass container; keep cool and dry.
To Make Tea:
Use unflavored, loose black tea (darjeeling is good).
Boil 6 cups water in a medium saucepan.
Add 6 cups rice or soymilk and bring it to the boiling point.
Add the tea leaves and brew to desired strength.
Add sweetener to taste and tea spice mixture (1/4 teaspoon per cup.)
Strain through sieve and serve steaming hot.
Notes:
Tea spice can also be added to individual cups of tea if using tea bags; just add 1/4 teaspoon to each cup.
For a decaffeinated herbal version, substitute peppermint tea for the darjeeling.
Hope this helps you.

Yep, to make it:
(1) Put 2½ cups. water in a small pot with the sugar, cloves, ginger, crushed cardamom pods, cinnamon stick, and peppercorns.
(2) Slowly bring to a boil over medium-low heat and simmer for a few minutes.
(3) Add 2 rounded tsps. of tea, teabags could be used, turn off the heat, cover, and let steep for 3-5 minutes.
(4) Add milk to the pot, turn the heat back on to medium-low and heat through.
(5) Strain the tea into mugs or a teapot and serve.
Hope this helps

Mama's Chai Tea

1/2 t black peppercorns
3 whole cloves
1/4 # (2 good thumb-length pieces) grated fresh ginger root
1 tsp or 2 tea bags jasmine tea
1/2 gallon of water
Place cloves in water and bring to a boil. Add everything but jasmine tea. Continue to softly boil for 1 hour. Turn off burner. Add jasmine tea bags for 6 minutes. Strain pot of tea and enjoy. If too spicy, cut down on ginger and peppercorns.

Black tea made in a pan. Add cinnamon, cardamon, garam masala, take off the heat and infuse for at least 5 minutes. Strain into cup or glass and if you want to sweaten it use condensed milk instead of milk and sugar. You can also buy tea bags at your local Indian store - but that's a bit of a cheat. Only Indians buy them!

Liz,
Yeah...it's marketed in the U.S. as spiced chai.
You can get it in your local grocery store, likely...Celestial Seasonings makes an excellent version, regular and decaf. Just make it like any regular tea that's in a teabag. Add honey or sugar and heated half & half...excellent.
There are other companies that make an instant where the creamer and sugar are already in the mix...just add hot water and stir. These are not as good as the tea bags, in my humble opinion.

Yes my GF made it with boiled water and milk, sugar, tea bags, cardammons and spices.. boil it on the cooker and strain it into mugs. Plenty of sugar and depends if you like creamier tea or spicier tea... depends on taste, but making your own is the best way.

I love vanilla chai tea by bigelow. I brew it, pour lots of splenda in it and add heavy whipping cream to it. It's yummy.
See the first link for a desciption of vanilla chai and take a look at the second link, which has a lot of cool recipes and stuff. The chai martini sounds interesting.

Hi - yes I do... but do not get it whereby it is pre-packed as you own individual taste will dictate the strength.
Follow this simple ingredients guide.
Water
Teabag(s)
pods of cardamom
cinnamon stick ground & to taste
ginger dried & to taste
2 cloves to taste
+ Sugar to taste
MAke sure the ingredients are left to boil for at ten minutes so adding more than necessary water is important |
Add the milk & simmer for about 5 mins.
Then pour & enjoy !!!!!!!!
