Phlegm is often caused by smoking, or as a result of being sick. If you were sick, just wait a week or two and it will clear up. If you are concerned, ask your doctor to be sure it isn't a sign of anything more serious.

Phlegm is the body's natural, autoimmune response to something. If you have allergies and/or asthma, then phlegm is triggered by allergens like smoke, dust, smells, and plants just to name a few.
Phlegm can be an indication of an infection. If you have a cold, you body is trying to flush out the germs. When the body fights those germs, blood cells die. The body will also flush out the dead blood cells.
If you are having trouble with phlegm, try to drink more water. Then take note of allergens around you that may be irritating you. If the phlegm is yellow or green for more then a week, see a doctor, you may have a bacteria.
By the way Musinex is an over the counter medication. You don't need a prescription for it.

first off, if you smoke, stop smoking. it can lead to more discolored, heavy flem. call your doctor and get permission to order musinex, just in case he/she might object to you taking it for medical reasons, check with him/her first. the musinex will help you extremely if you take it.
