Have you thought of researching which hospitals specialize in lung conditions and contacting them to see if there are any new studies being done on emphysema. Also, perhaps she would be eligible for some type of surgery that is being tested.
I have COPD and if there were any chance, even the smallest chance I think I would grab it. Also, I know of many people who volunteer so others can be helped.
Enjoy each other now as much as you can, you sound like a wonderful daughter. God bless you and your mom.

There isn't anything that I am aware of. Basically she is suffocating, that's got to be a horrible feeling. The only thing I can offer is maybe inhaling menthol products, it might help dislodge some of the mucuos that builds up. My mom was diagnosed with early stage lung cancer, she has been a smoker for 60yrs. When diagnosed, she denied that cigarettes had anything to do with it, she went through chemo and radiation, smoking the entire time, 3packs a day. She has been recently told that she is a cancer survivor, which fueled her denial about cigarettes, and she still smokes away. I know there will be a day when I will be taking care of her like you are. I'm sorry to hear of your trouble, just being "there" for your mom can be comforting, try to do those activities that you always said you would have time for, take your mom on a weekend vacation, ask her to tell you her memoirs, have her write a journal about her life and her dreams for her children. These will be things you can "hold onto" when she passes. I wish you well.

My grandmother has had Emphysema for all of my life, she has to take breathing treatments twice a day. Things that help are air filters, to cut back on dust. No pets if at all possible, all pets create dust(especially birds). Keep her living area very clean. No smoking around her or in her home. As for a cure, I have never heard of any. I am sorry, but this is not fixible right now.

You should be prepared to provide a permanent mobile source of oxygen for her together with all the peripherals of the equipment.(HUmidifier etc.) Also be prepared for the fact that she will have to take her oxygen cylinder with her wherever she goes.
As for medicine the epinephrine group helps at some stages but I am sure your doc must have prescribed this or something similar.
It goes without saying that she CAN ABSOLUTELY NOT smoke. (Even if it was only for the presence of O2, which could cause a nasty explosion).

Unfortunately there is no cure for this. Maybe ask her doctor if there is anything they can give her to make her comfortable.

No, there is nothing you can do. I wish you the best, as your mom is going to suffer in the last stages of it.
