While blood donation is compensated financially in the US, payment for organs has become a controversial question among the transplant community, and is currently illegal in the US. The fear is that it would encourage organ "brokers", and preying on the poor, who sometimes may not be suitable donors to begin with, due to underlying medical conditions, not to mention the increase in black market organ trafficking. I don't really know if paying for organs is a good idea, as it would appeal more to the baser instinct of greed, rather than altruism. What many do not realize, hwoever, is that altruistic donation (where you donate say, a kidney, for instance, to an unrelated patient whom you've never even met, for the sake of helping another person's quality of life) is completely acceptable and even encouraged. In fact, it's been increasing over the past few years. And, the donor's medical expenses are paid for in full, usually by the recipient's insurance, or through the hospital. But, paying for the organ, to me, is not appropriate.

No, the problem with making organs a commodity (which would happen if they became worth money) is that this could cause pressure (or use of less than honorable methods) to sell organs, especially by the poor. Also, it would cause more requested donations by people who should not be donating (those with diseases that can be transmitted by donation) which is why blood donation is not compensated now, those most willing to donate for money are generally those who you least want to do it.

The problem of paying patients for their organs is the consequences, you'll get an even bigger black market for organs, and the chances of Mr Poor dying just because Mrs Muchomoney needs a new heart go very high, it's actually unethical also, there are allot of consequences
