It is called Left Ventricular Hypertrophy. It is caused by having hig blood pressure. This makes the heart pump harder to circulate blood, which causes the muscle to increase in mass. Since the heart is held in a sack that prevents its expansion outward, the muscle builds into the left ventricle. This reduces the amount of blood that can be pushed out of the heart with each beat, causing a back up of blood throughout the circulatory system, particularly in the lungs. This leads to the condition called Congestive Heart Failure, which can be deadly.
If you have high blood pressure, you should see you family doctor. He can prescribe medications called beta blockers (Toporol, Lisinopril etc...) to lower your BP. He can also suggest other methods to lower your BP and reduce stress.

Hope this helps.
