There is a difference between Oral and Genital Herpes.
Oral herpes is caused by a virus called HSV1 (Herpes simplex virus 1). There are 100 million + cases of HSV1 so far. Outbreaks caused by HSV1 tend to be less severe, shorter, and there are less reoccurences.
Genital Herpes is caused by HSV2. There are 30 million+ cases so far. HSV2 is the more severe of the virus, with longer outbreaks that occur more often.
You can get genital herpes in your mouth, and oral herpes in your genitals. The virus doesn't care where it infects; it just looks for a moist mucus membrane. So, if you have oral herpes and you preform oral sex on someone you can give them oral herpes on their genitals. If you have genital herpes, and someone preforms oral sex on you, you can give them genital herpes on their mouth.

One is on or in your mouth the other is on your genitalia. Oral is a bit more accepted because people consider it a cold sore. They are both contagious but, are medicated differently.

LOCATION...LOCATION...LOCATION...LOL
No, but seriously, the patholgy is the same. The herpes simplex virus is the same no matter where it is on your body. Cold sores are actually the same as genital herpes.
