My 35 year old sister has been diagnosed having diabetes a year and a half ago. Although she takes maintenance medication, she's not into insuln injections since she could regulate her sugar levels through her diet. The breakouts had become itchy and I'm concerned about her condition and maybe a few suggestions would be welcome on some over the counter products that might work to reduce or eliminate ther acne. thanks

Yes. What is her control like? Just because she can survive without insulin it does not automatically mean her control is good.

High blood sugars and high insulin levels can contribute to breakouts, as both conditions are inflammatory and high blood sugars promote bacteria growth.

Also, many Type 2 diabetics are overweight, and have high cortisol levels, also triggering acne.

She may also have dry skin if her blood sugar control and circulation are poor. Are you sure her "acne" is not boils? This is very serious, as they can become infected in diabetics, leading to amputation in very severe cases.

She may also have other skin conditions, some related to diabetes, some not.

Please have her see her doctor.

In the meantime, oatmeal baths may help with the itching. There are also special creams on the market for very dry diabetic skin.

There are some school of thoughts that diabetes can cause acne, although this is when the diabetes is really uncontrolled. best recommendation - have ur sister check her sugar levels and make sure they're between 90 - 130 pre-prandial (before meals) and less than 180 post-prandial. if she's w/in these levels, her acne is probably not related to diabetes. if it's just itching, u can try some benadryl cream/gel. for the acne, u could try anything w/ salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide ( i believe clearasil makes products with both agents) - they're keratolytic agents and should help to reduce the acne. if it's really bad u could use antibiotic agents, although those are with prescripitons. There are also creams w/ rx that work pretty well - hope this helps

Yes, the birth control pills will fix the irregular periods and for some, the acne. The Spironolactone would work work better on the hair (though it will take awhile). I have never heard of it doing anything for acne. You can take both at the same time. I also have PCOS and I took the pill for fourteen years (1993-2007). I was diagnosed in 1993 after being misdiagnosed for several years. I have had the irregular periods and the body hair, but I never had acne. I got sun damage to my face when I was 13 years old. I have had PCOS since at least age 17. I used Spironolactone for two months. I had to stop taking it because it made me sick, but it does not do that for all women.
