First pick a date to quit. It is best to quit on a Monday so you have all week to be off of the nicotine before you go out to a restaurant or bar on Friday, Sat., or Sunday. Tell your family and friends why you want to quit and let them know that you would appreciate their support. Ask them not to smoke around you for the first month or so as this would act as a trigger for you. They should understand. If not, you may have to limit contact to just PHONE CALLS until you feel strong enough to go out with them.
Then 2 weeks before your quit date change brands completely. If you smoke menthol cigarettes switch to generic regular cigarettes or the opposite (regular cigs to strong menthol flavor such as Kools or Newports). This will act as "negative feedback" which will therefore diminish your craving for them a bit just because the taste is so disgusting to you.
One week before you quit buy a box of nicotine patches and read all the information included. If you are smoking 1 pack per day you should use the 21mg patch. If you smoke less than 1 pack per day use the 14mg patch. Then write down at least 5 major reasons you want to quit and make 2 photocopies of the list. Place one list in the car / truck and put one copy in the room you smoke most often in along with a framed picture of your family, parents, or anyone who you know of or admired that died of lung cancer.
If you do use the patches, apply a patch around 3 a.m. the morning of the first day of the rest of your life - without cigarettes. It takes a couple of hours for the medication to absorb into the bloodstream.
Buy all gasoline from the pump. Don't go inside the store.
You will be amazed how much clearly your thinking is and how good you'll feel after just 2 weeks of so.
Best wishes,
JW15

Step #1 no matter which method you use, you have to want to quit.
If you don't have the mind set to quit, you will fail

If your doing 1/2 pack a day or less, the stop smoking aids appear to work for most folks, If you doing over a pack a day, you will probably need another method to get down to the 1/2 a day level

I did the time between smokes method and quit a 5 pack a day habit
