If this is your normal bp I'd say its on the high side and yes you can get out of breath. Another sign is a headache or dizziness but people with high bp sometimes never even know it until its been diagnosed.
If you are checking your bp at the local walgreens on one of those machines be aware that they are not acurate at all. The best thing you can do is to have your bp checked by a doctor regularly to see if it stays high and if so they will treat you. High BP is nothing to mess with! Good luck!

Its difficult to say based on the info you provide but, many people would never feel a BP of 157/89 and simply hypertension would not generally lead to shortness of breath.
It could very well be that you are quite concerned about your blood pressure and you are simply becoming a little paranoid about it, which is causing you to have some anxiety, which will then lead to even higher BP. You may simply be having a mild anxiety attack which typically leads to some hyperventilation and or shortness of breath.
BP in that range is generally not dangerous, not in the short term anyway, so there is no need to rush to the emergency department. But, if you continue to have severe shortness of breath then you might want to see a physician sooner rather than later.
Try to relax, if possible, again, this isn't a life threatening pressure and chances are you will feel better soon. Your physician will want to make some bp measurements over a period of time to make sure this isn't a transient problem caused by something else, like stress or anxiety for example. If it remains too high then you might be started on medication.

Best of luck.

You didn't mention your age which has a lot to do with heart disease. The high blood pressure is something to worry about. Consult your doctor on how to regulate it.

The thing about having shortness of breath could be due to atherosclerosis which is a hardening of blood vessels due to plaque build up. The body tries to take care of these build ups and can create an embolus. The high blood pressure creates too much pressure on the plaque and some of it might break off creating a thrombus. This will continue to travel through your veins and arteries until it gets stuck in an area that's too tight for it to go through and blocks off the tissue's supply of blood which could be the reason that you are short of breath. If this thrombus gets lodged in your lungs it blocks off a significant area for them to exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide.

This is not something to take lightly. Consult your doctor soon. Best of luck.

Do go for a checkup. I'm tired of hearing of friends dropping dead from heart attacks at such young ages. I'm going myself to a cardiolist in a couple of weeks (heart palpitations) as I had a stress test which was positive (still trying to figure out what that means...my doctor "doesn't know").

So anyhow, that is high yes, but he should have waited and taken another 5 minutes later.

My BP is always up at the doctors. I don't like her which is one reason. *S* Anyhow it can be 145 over 80 there (that's high to her) and I get home and take mine (I bought a machine years back while I was preggers and my BP was going nuts) and it's usually around 135/78 or so.

Do go and take those free readings at the drugstore. Often if you are exercising it will go up. It will be lower when resting. Your BP fluctuates during the day too to get a true reading you should be sitting and calm for a good 10 minutes before taking it.

Definitely you are on the verge of heart disease however...it's inevitable...over 70 percent of us will develop it.

Eat well, exercise, don't smoke, drink lots of water, get rest, don't stress....time to start taking care of ourselves and stay healthy for the rest of our lives on this planet! :~)

Yes this someothing you need to monitor for a week and if your blood pressure is still high see your doc for treatment. As for being out of breath quickly that one needs more details posted.

Shortness of breath is a top indicator of a serious underlying condition. You should follow through on the test regiment and consider a cardiologist over your PCP to rule out a serious life threatening condition!

Yes. Your blood pressure is too high. Listen to what your doctor says and do it before it gets worse.

Absolutely YES, this is something to worry about. Of course you only give the tip of the iceberg, you need to see your physician who will take a complete medical history and examine you. Just see your MD
