Dr started me out on Metformin, 1 a day for 2 days than 2 a day 500 mg each, this is the third day after checking my sugar levels, they have been low, today after my meal I got a reading of 59, testing two hours later, I was borderline but last lab work came back reading of 170, but even when I was borderline and on no meds, I bought a test kit and blood sugar always seemed not gar out of range or mostly on range, reason he put me on Metformin was he wanted to be safe till I lost about 40 pounds, this is all new to me, today he said cut back one pill, and eat more calories, should i get another opinion or go to a specialist, thanks for any advise. Could it be the Metforminakeing my level to low on my diet.

Metformin can be prescribed in people with borderline diabetes as a safeguard if and when the person "crosses over" to diabetes, also because it can promote weight loss. Weight loss can help prevent diabetes, and can even reverse borderline diabetes. A person whose sugars are high enough to tolerate metformin will benefit both from sugar control and weight loss. The reason why he is asking you to cut back a pill is that it is working - you are losing weight and needing less by way of sugar control, thus allowing you to have a more normal diet. Your doctor is making you better.

Metformin acts differently on some people. I'm glad he cut you back to one a day; you did the right thing by informing him that your glucose was too low. My advice to you is to eat frequent, small meals. Instead of using carbs between meals (like cookies or white bread), stick to the protein: peanut butter on whole wheat. That way, you will keep you sugar regular. Also if you are concerned about losing weight, when you exercise, you will be lowering you glucose levels for a day or two. It's worth it to start walking 10-15 minutes a day. When you drop the 40 lbs. you won't have to take the pills. Check out the book "Sugarbusters" and it can help you with your diet and explain everything about glycemic indexes and how insulin works in your body. Godloveya.

emergrnk left out that Metformin also aids insulin in cellular glucose absorbtion. What Meformin won't do is lower your blood sugar below normal. At least I have never had that reaction in three years of using it nor have I heard of it happening to anyone. What you want to do is learn as much as you can about managing your weight, your diet, and get plenty of exercise. You cannot know too much about this stuff. May I suggest checking out my diabetes info page: http://www.geocities.com/seabulls69/Type_II_Diabetes.html

metformin can be used when on a diet or while taking insulin. metformin decreases your hepatic glucose production it also decreases your intestinal glucose absorption. it also takes 2-4 weeks for the medicine to reach it peak performance. some side effects to expect are abdominal bloating, nausea and diarrhea and it will leave a metallic taste in your mouth

You should keep a record of your levels and at your next appointment, let the doctor know what they are. Maybe you do not even need medicine, you know with some cases of Diabetes,
with exercise and some changes in your diet, it is possible to control the disease....

So good luck and I hoped I helped...
