If your mom has Type 1 diabetes (the severe non preventable kind that often appears in childhood and always needs insulin injections), then your risk is considered to be in the range of 2-4%. There is a large genetic component to Type 1 (It is not preventable), but the risk of passing it on is generally low. If you have a strong family history (say 5 people in your family have it), your risk may be at least 50%. All you can do in this case is to have regular screenings and learn the symptoms so you know what to watch for. Type 1 diabetes will make you very sick quite quickly, so you will almost know for certain if you get it.
If your mom has Type 2 diabetes (the common kind often related to lifestyle/obesity), then you have about a 50% chance. BUT in most cases, only if you: a) Are overweight/obese, b)Follow a poor diet, and c) Do not exercise.
Following a healthy lifestyle can prevent most (but not all) cases of Type 2 diabetes.
If your mom has a rare genetic kind of Type 2 diabetes called MODY, you can also have your genes tested to see if you are at risk.
You can also have genetic and antibody screening for Type 1 diabetes to see if you may develop it in the future.
Please ask your doctor if you are still concerned.

We would need to know if your mom had Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes. If she was a Type1 one I'd say your chances were greater than 50%.
However if she was a Type 2 (adult onset) you could manage your weight and eat appropriately and likely have a less than 10% chance of acquiring that.
(All assuming this is not prevalent in your fathers bloodline.)

i am a type 1 and have been told by many doctros that the % my kids get it are 3 - 5 %. If I were a type 2 the % would be 30+ %. That is just what I have been told over the years by many doctors.

I don't know an actual percentage number, but it is likely if you are not very careful, you will also develop diabetes. I am the 4th generation of women on my mother's side to develop Type 2 diabetes. I am the youngest to develop it and I became insulin dependent the quickest.
For those that say Type 2 is not genetic, you are wrong. I am the perfect example of that.
Please take care of yourself, eat right, stay active and visit your doctor regularly. Diabetes changes your life.

Yes, the chance is well over 50%. And if you carry extra weight all your life, the risk is even worse!
The best thing you can do is always watch your weight, exercise, and eat healthy foods.
