Yes, the pain does sometimes persist for quite a while; luckily in decreasing intensity.

The pain may be worse doring coughing or deep breathing.

Your doctor must have prescribed you an antiinflamatory agent as well as an analgesic. Do take them regularly ,as prescribed, the pain should go away.

Best wishes.

I work with open heart surgeries all the time in icu. If you are having sternal pain (breast bone) that is fairly normal unless it becomes severe and then you need to see your surgeon. If you are having other bone pain then you need to see your physician immediately, this could be what they call osteomyelitis, bone infection. You should see your doctor as soon as possible.

I'm a nurse. Any unusual symptom should be reported to the surgeon or your primary doctor, there could be something wrong. Don't be alarmed until the doctor tells you what's going on with you. In the meantime take it easy and take pain medicine as needed. Take care and all the best.

I am not sure but did they have to cut your rib cage to do the surgery? If so thhen it would be the bone healing.
