You know if you have high or elevated blood pressure (HBP) by taking the pressure and comparing it to "normal" pressures. You can lower it many ways...weight loss, exercise, medication, meditation, no caffeine, etc. Your doctor should be able to guide you better than the people on Yahoo.

You have to take your blood pressure to know it's up... Usually there are no signs indicating a rise ... That's why it's called the SILENT KILLER...

To control HBP you need to cut back on salt intake

Loose weight if need be

Stop Smoking/Drinking

Exercise more

And make sure to eat Healthy!

Even with these changes HBP made need to be medicated. So don't diagnosis yourself make sure to check with your physician

You can find a blood pressure machine at many drug and supermarket with pharmacies. Call around to find one in your neighborhood.

If you think you have high blood pressure, go to your family doctor for medication. It is nothing to fool around with.

Your second question first? How does one know if one's BP is high? Get it checked or buy a kit if you can afford it. And how to get it down? Yoga and Breathing exercises, stress relief by other means and finally medication if needed. And yes, diet plays a big role in it.
