There is NO cure for HPV but for most people it can go away on it's own. Their bodies can basically "fight off" the virus. This doesn't always happen, but it's possible.

It never goes away, but after a while it will usually lay dormant in the body. Do you know what strand she has? There are over 70 different strands and while most don't do anything, 2 cause genital warts and a couple cause cervical cancer. However, cancer is rare in the fact that with regular pap smears, you will almost always catch it while it is treatable. It's really no big deal to have HPV and most of us have it. It's just difficult to ascertain exactly how many because many people carry the virus but never develop any symptoms. It's all in the individual person and their immune system.
There is a good book about it called:
What Your Doctor May NOT Have Told You About HPV and Abnormal Pap Smears
by: Joel Palefsky and Jody Handley
It really gets into detail. Since the writing of the book, they've come out with a test (currently only approved for women over 30) and a vaccine for girls age 9-25.
But in all honesty, despite the fact that it is an "STD" and has that social stigma attatched to it, it is harmless if you get regular pap smears.

well i personally have had this and it is a quite common disease/virus among females these days. HPV can be treated but as far as i know they have not found a 100 % cure. I had to go thru a few different type treatments b/c my papsmears kept comin back abnormal. They had to do a freezing on my cervix where they froze the abnormal cells then there were couple other treatments they had to do. My treatments were over 3 years ago and i am fine now. My Dr. said i could get outbreaks but then again it may not come back. So far ive been lucky, I've never had any outbreaks or problems whatsoever! She does need to get it treated tho b/c it could get worse if left untreated! Just to calm your friends worries, i was shocked to have gotten HPV because i had only been sexually involved with one person. my boyfriend of several months. I thought i was a nasty person for gettin this std but my dr. relieved me and made me feel alot better about the situation.

No, this STD will never go away.. It's like the flu, you always have it in your body, it may lay dormant for your whole life or can appear sporadically. HPV can appear physically as genital warts or the only sign your OB/GYN may find if you dont have the warts is when she gives a pap smear and it comes back positive. You
can have the warts removed by various procedures (freezing, punching, cutting, laser, etc) or you wait for them to disappear.
She can have sex just like anyone else but should use a condom to prevent transmission (women don't usually spead the virus, their just mainly the carriers) and to keep her safe from other types of HPV or STDs and AIDS/HIV.
It's fairly probable to think that most people have this STD seeing as over 70% of the American population has it.
Recent vaccines have been approved for use against the HPV strands that can cause cervical cancer, but they only prevent against the type(s) you don't currently have. If you have a particular strain or strains, the vaccine will not prevent those. Recent studies have shown that if you minimize stress and keep your body healthy and eat lots of dark greens with iron that it can reduce your chances of having outbreaks.
Heres some extra info on the vaccines

HPV is a virus that can cause cancer! She should see a physician and if in fact she does have HPV her doctor would have told her what to do.
