The blood test will give you the exact result for both of you. Do not worry much. Herpes can't kill you but it's annoying. Even though you do not have outbreak, it's not that you are free from herpes. I have HSV1 and never had outbreak until 2 weeks ago. It's treatable but not curable. You can live normal life like those who do not have HSV, but of course when it outbreaks, you may feel pain, itching, tingling and depression along with it. But once it's healed, you will feel normal again. You can have kids (but talk to your doctor about it when are planning to have baby). Do not take medication unless necessary because these antiviral medication aren't good for kidneys and liver (if taking for a long time). Take these medication when there is early warning symptoms or outbreak. then it will heal faster. Do not stress out and have worries because they can trigger the outbreaking of herpes.Get tested. Do not worry so much for now. good luck

The very best thing you can do is get tested. Herpes can lay dormant for quiet a while, and it is possible to spread herpes even if you don't have an outbreak. I will have had the virus for 3 years this May, and haven't had an outbreak in about a year. My boyfriend, who also has herpes, has had 1 very small outbreak, 3 years ago. So I think you, and your boyfriend should both get tested. Here is some info for you:
What happens if a person is infected with genital herpes?
After becoming infected with the genital herpes virus, it may take days, weeks, months, or even years for any symptoms to appear. Because of this, it may be difficult to know when and from whom the virus was contracted.
After becoming infected with genital herpes, some people may experience a first outbreak that is so mild it is barely noticeable. But some people may have a severe outbreak within days of contracting the genital herpes virus.
Can someone have genital herpes and not know it?
Yes, while the symptoms are often visible and painful, they can be subtle and often go unrecognized. In fact, approximately 75% of people with genital herpes do not know they have the virus.
How is genital herpes diagnosed?
If you know you've been exposed to the genital herpes virus and you have the classic signs (e.g., painful, clustered blisters on top of red swollen skin), your doctor may make the diagnosis based on this alone. However, in someone who does not have these signs or the diagnosis is uncertain, there are two types of tests that can be used. A culture test looks for the presence of genital herpes in cells taken from a sore. A blood test is used to measure the body's immune response (antibodies) against the genital herpes virus.

You should both be tested. It is possible he was infected but has never displayed symptoms but could end up shedding virus. It's better to get it checked out. Both of you.
I am sure she is just trying to make sure that you both don't suffer the same fate. It's a pain in the @ss yes, but she is required by law to inform him he should be tested. So she is really just following the law. Better than not being told at all.
My Adoptive Mother contracted Herpes from my step father after several years, even though he never had any symptoms ever and still doesn't to this day. It is rare but possible. There are different strains, some may not be as strong as others.
For example HSV-2 is much more mild and can lay dormant.
I doubt it is an attempt to keep him in her life, they share a child together and are therefore going to be a part of each others life through the child. And telling him to get tested for herpes is not really something one does to keep someone in their life. It's not exactly an endearing situation!
Once you are both tested you can put all this behind you both.

Herpes is a very selective virus in the sense that some people, even though they have it, will never get an outbreak. It is possible that if he has it and he never gets an outbreak, you can get it from him. However, you can get tested if you are unsure. Also, even though it is possible for him to not get an outbreak, it is very unlikely. When you first get the virus and your body is not used to dealing with it, your boyfriend should have gotten a REALLY BAD breakout unless he has an amazing immune system (not likely). Anyway, I contracted the virus several years back and I had a really bad outbreak once and then I would get a cold sore every few months with more and more time in between. It has been three years and I have not had another outbreak.

Yes, there isn't any. Herpes is caused by a virus. Actually, there is little cure for viruses nowadays. The only thing that you can generally do in the case of a viral infection is strengthen the immune system and hope it fights it off. Not with Herpes, the immune system can't win against it. Thus you only get to treat the symptoms. Once you're infected, it stays with you for life. So don't get infected.
Personal experience. I have had genital herpes for over 5 years.

The herpes virus can lay dormant for a while. Years even. So, what she is telling you could be true. It is wise to be tested. Just because there is no evidence of an outbreak does not mean that you or your boyfriend have not contracted the virus. At least she had the guts to inform your boyfriend that it may be possible that he could have contracted the virus. That's not always easy to do. This is why safe sex is very important. When you sleep with someone, you are sleeping with who they had slept with in the past by proxy. I really hope that everything works out and this is a false alarm.

Some people don't notice the outbreaks. I think that is complete B.S. But, I think something like 1/3 people don't notice their outbreaks. So, it could be possible that he really did give it to her. And your bf may have it. I was told and I read that it takes about 2 weeks to see your first outbreak after exposure. And I have had experience. So, I believe the 2 week thing. There is really no testing. They could do a blood test maybe. Just like for warts. I wanted to get tested for that. My Dr. said there isn't a test. She said I would just have to wait and see if anything comes up. And some people don't even get herpes from their partners because of condoms and valtrex and the placement of the lesions. I hope this helps.
p.s. I do agree with the person above me because the first outbreak is REALLY REALLY bad and painful and you get really sick. And I have had only one outbreak and haven't had one since my first 2 years ago. My mom has had it for 20 years and had 2 outbreaks but we both take meds.
