First of all, let's clear something up. Women can die from syphilis as well, this is not something that only affects men.
From the time someone is infected with syphilis it usually takes about 7 days to see the primary syphilitic infection. This presents as a chancre on the genitals. It is not painful, and, left untreated will go away by itself. Then syphilis goes into the second stage which usually presents as a rash somewhere on the body. Again, this is painless and will go away on it's own. Tertiary syphilis will usually present as a boil-like infection somewhere on the body. Again, it is painless, but people usually go to the doctor for this. If no medical treatment is sought, it will go away on it's own. After this third stage is when the syphilis goes into the body and attacks the organs.
The time one takes to go from stage to stage is not set in stone as everyone is different, and you can get syphilis at any time in your life.
If you want a good story on syphilis, look up Al Capone. He's the most famous person that died of syphilis. It made him crazy first.

It takes about twenty years, with the disease lying dorment sometimes for years between the active stages. Third stage syphilis destroys the central nervous system and brain function. It is not at all a pleasant way to check out.

It really all depends on the person. The evil Tuskegee experiment that was carried out by our own US government was a study in just that. In fact one of the three only survivors during Clinton's administration got an official apology from him and our government. So it ranges from 6 months to never. Again depending on the person and other factors.

syphilis is easily treated. if one didn't want to treat it it could take decades to die. Lots of nasty secondary problems though, wouldn't be pleasant.
