Short term effects of nicotine on the respiratory system would be:
irritation of trachea
irritation of larynx
breathlessness
lung irritation

Long term effects:
decreased lung function
build up of poisonous substances in respiratory system
lung damage
lung infections
damage to air sacs in lung
possibility of cancer
possibility of emphysema

Both long and short term effects:
coughing
wheezing
shortness of breath on exertion

These are the pharmacologic side effects from using nicotine. As you can see, the only effect it has on the pulmonary system is an increased respiration rate.

If you meant smoking, then that is a completely different thing. While nicotine is highly addictive, it isn't the problem in smoking, all of the other carcinogens in the smoke are the problem.

Gastrointestinal - Decreased appetite
Neurological - Medullary depression, neurologic blockade
Cardiac - Tachycardia, hypertension
Pulmonary - Increased respiratory rate
Systemic - Tolerance, dependence
