Don't Worry! I'm 17 years old and I was diagnosed with a Bicuspid Aortic Valve when I was about 11 years old. This is a common abnormality. Some people never have problems and will NEVER require surgery! I have a little leak in my heart too, but the doctor says that is perfectly NORMAL! We all have leaks as we grow older. ITS FINE. For your Dad, make sure he makes an appointment with a Cardiologist and see that his heart is perfectly fine. Be sure to make appointments to see a Doctor every year just to be safe. TRUST ME. Your Dad is Okay! He will live a loooooong healthy life.

The aortic valve is the valve between the left ventricle of the heart (the main pumping chamber) and the aorta (the main artery that carries blood to the body). It can be called the gateway from the heart to the body.

A leaky aortic valve can be caused by many things. The important thing is, how bad it is. If it's not too bad (leaky), it can be treated with medicines. If it gets bad enough, it can be replaced surgically. The surgery (it's surgery - it's risky) is very common and as safe as any surgery can be. Talk to him about your fears. He has more information about his condition than we do.

Good luck!

Most of the time that is not a big deal. You should hear my heart. I don't have a secondary beat. My heart has grown a little funny during the more stressful years in my past damaging the valves in my heart. So instead of a thump, thump sound I have a thump, blow, thump, blow sound called a wind blown heart murmur.

I currently do very fast physical work and expect to be able to do so for a number of decades. I can walk very fast for a very long time without anything bothering me, but going up steps which requires the heart to do more work is harder for me than a normal person. Just like your father probably will, I will live a very long life yet.

A leaky heart valve is not a large problem as long as it doesn't get worse. If that is your dad's only problem with his heart, then he will live a long time.

Sometimes there's a little leakage that means nothing at all. Sometimes it's related to other heart problems, and some people are born with a valve that has two instead of the normal three leaves. If it's bad enough, it can be replaced with an artificial valve or one from a pig, but he may need no treatment at all or he may do fine with medication. He may not have all the details himself, yet, but you should talk with him about it, not us.
