back-up bags of ice stashed somewhere (empty washing machine is a good place)

plenty of food (tho not all out, getting room temp... replenish about half-way thru)

lame or no music.... get a good mix of music that makes people move and have it playing a bit loudly

Letting guests drink too much, start fights, and try to drive home! Limit alcoholic drinks by simply providing a limited number of them. Have plenty of bottled water and soft drinks on hand. Ice is something you don't want to run out of, nor is food. Make some simple, but filling, items that you can refrigerate and pull out at regular intervals, or pop in the oven and bake in less than 15 minutes. A good rule of thumb is to make sure you have something with protein and carbs. Have fun!

Tons of food and drink, so as not to run out. A smoking area outside with a receptacle for butts. Tons of napkins, plates, cups, plastic glasses. Make sure the bathroom is stocked with TP, and have a trash can somewhere where people can easily find/see it, otherwise you'll find plastic cups and forks in your plants or behind the sofa. Then "guest"-proof your house. Anything important, breakable, or valuable...hide. I've had CDs and cologne stolen, and a wall-print broken.

Have plenty of food, a variety of drinks, ice, toilet paper, and good music. Also, make sure your guest get along and like each other. Arguing really brings the party down.

I love to have folks over and here is what I have learned...the more people you invite, the easier your night will go. If you invite lots of guests they will mingle and entertain each other and talk for days about what a great host you are. If you invite only a few, you will feel obligated to spend time with each of your guests, which will leave you frazzled and exhausted. Have fun!

make sure the punch is completely supervised and no children to drink it (they can have special drinks) my uncle spiked the punch last christmas and got my grandma drunk. funny to see a 91 year old grandma drunk, but very foolish the next day when she was sicker than a dog.

yes, if you are thinking of serving a bombe alaska for dessert, don't forget to heat the brandy before you try to light it.

this happened to me at a very elegant party, [so I thought] it is very embarrassing
