Here are some thoughts, since you didn't say what he was into:
1. Horseback riding and a picnic
2. Wine tasting and a picnic
3. Dinner at your favorite restaurant, only with a surprise party of
friends and family
4. Lasertag
5. An art class.....stained glass anyone?
6. Dinner at home with friends, dancing at your favorite club
7. A rent-a-chef meal at your home for the two of you
8. A balloon ride and champagne
9. Glider ride and champagne
10. If you are near a river or the bay, how about brunch on a boat?

If he likes friends, this would be a good time to call a few like minded couples or just an assortment of friends. Ask them to carry a dish and you make the main dish and provide bread or rice.
You can have a theme party od Spring or see his likes and chose a theme.
organize some party games to have fun.
Keep in mind his likes and dislikes for food and people.
I'd avoid family this first time.
Do decorate the place and order a cake.
Or bake a cake.
If you 2 like a quiet time to yourself, you can either cook him a good meal and have a candle light dinner at home or take him out to a good eating place , for which you can dress up well.
Have fun.

Many of my girlfriends knocked me for this, but I threw by fiancee a throwback party for his 36th. I took his cell phone and hid it. I went through and found all the friends I could and told them to spread the word that it was a party for his friends from "back in the day". I rented them a hotel suite, it you look for a Holiday Inn, or something like that, they usually have 2 bedroom suites for under $200. I cooked a whole bunch of poultry (can't do pork in this group) and put it in crock pots, a few sides and bought a few bottles of liquor. And yes, I did get strippers. I put a deck of cards on the table, a few disposable cameras, shut the drapes and handed off the key card to my brother in law!

If you want to surprise him...I have a great way to do it. For my wifes 50th birthday party I sent her an invitation to one of her friends birthday party. I didn't even know this friend very well. I talked to her friend and I even sent the invitation from the friends town so the post mark would be from there. So when we got "to her friends" birthday party....there were gobs of cars there and My wife had no idea that the party was for her....boy was she ever surprised!!!!

gather his family and friends especially those close to him or those he has not seen in a while
tell him that ud spend a simple dinner together. but when u get to ur fave restaurant, theyd all be waiting for him.
make it intimate in a sense that only those really close to himwould be there. like a big family dinner. that way its affordable yet meaningful.

throw an 80's party. ask all the guests to come decked out in 80's era outfits and all you would have to do is supply food and some 80's music! i've been to one and we all had so much fun!

It all depends on what your boyfriend likes to do.
What's his passion or favorite hobby.
pick something related to that and go with it.
