Nefchatel was the traditional spreadable cheese that be softest.
Then came along modern versions of cream cheese that are thicker and glueyer.Dont use Kraft though they taste like elmers glue literally ugh.

Cream cheese can be used but be a smidgeon harder to use on cake than icing but will melt in the same manner = not melt the same as frosting.

Difficult to get on unless you whip the heck out of it first. Can have condensation more than the frosting if you set the cake out water appears like on a coaster but this depends on the humidy.

I like cream cheese since stuff you stick to it will stick better if you like deco borders than icing.

Sour cream sour and used for salads and only certain desserts to mix into them to add a bit of sour lemon similar kick or zest.
No please dont use sour cream to cover your cakes with it will only fall right off cake sides.

Cream cheese is different from sour cream. Sour cream is used for toppings of tacos, potatoes, etc. but it can also be used in cakes and recipes of the like to make for a more moist outcome. Cream cheese can be used as a topping for crackers, bagels, etc. but it's got more of a sweetness to it. Most carrot cakes have cream cheese frosting - it is awesome!

yeah, you can use it to make icing for a cake..i think they use it for carrot cake. but don't pipe it directly onto a cake..it's milder and thicker than sour cream; it's not as "sour"
