i think i have a sinus infection but today while in the shower i was doing what we call here a farmers blow that where u hold one nostril down and blow out the other one. a big chunk flew out but it wasn't like most mucus i have seen. it was harder than normal but not hard as a rock it felt like i had a piece of squid in my hand and it it wasn't bloody all except a Lil piece on it. my nose did bleed for a few seconds after but then started running which it hasn't done at all up until now. is this norm and has any body else had this happen before?

it is not common but that happens sometimes, don't worry about it, anyway if you have fever, or any other infection symptoms go to your doctor to get a prescription. good luck

I have had something similar to this happen a couple of times. No it isn't pretty and doesn't feel the best. That was pus and phlegm. You have 8 sinus cavities. 2 above each eye, and 2 below each eye...that makes 8. When you get a sinus infection, these fill up with phlegm, mucus, and a lot of pus. What you did was allowed your nose to drain one of the 8 cavities...a lucky shot. But don't keep doing the farmer sneezes really hard. You could burst a brain blood vessel and have a tiny stroke call a Transient Ischemic Attack. If you are doing it at a moderate amount of force, fine. Just....I guess what I am trying to say is don't go trying too hard to reproduce another one of those. The best thing to drain those cavities and your nose is to get some saline nose spray. Now, this will usually be what they call "isotonic" which is equal to the amount of water to salt amounts you have in your tears and nose areas. If you add just a little bit more salt to the spray bottle (pull the spray nozzle off to get to the stuff inside) not too much-about an eighth of a teaspoon or about the size of a thumbtack or pushpin head in your hand-put into the bottle and shake for a good minute or two. The LAST thing you want is undissolved salt in your nose. Now you have a HYPERTONIC solution meaning that there is more salt than there should be in the solution...this is good and unless you have really sensitive nasal passages or get nosebleeds very easily (I mean super easily) then you are good to go. What will happen when you start spraying it into your nose is your body will react to fix it: it needs to send water to that area to balance the water to salt ratio and so winds up draining the fluid (the yucky stuff) from your nasal cavities. Also try holding a few sprays inside your nose by either putting the top of your head on the floor (so the liquid is trapped up near your forehead area because those are the hardest ones to drain-the top 4) for about 20 seconds to a minute. You may get a bit of a headache like when you snort water at the beach or pool. This is up to you. The normal way will still provide some relief...a lot actually. Oh, have LOTS of tissue ready when you start doing this and maybe even be over a sink or something. Good luck!

Try saline. Maybe your nose is just dry with the furnace runnig. I get scab like stuff in my nose during the winter months. I use saline. Showers and humidy is also good too.

If you are living where it is cold, the heated inside air may be damaging the skin inside of your nose....my oldest child and I get nosebleeds all the time in winter. The particular mucus you blew out may have been covering the weakened skin.
