Every once in awhile my heart will just flutter when I'm just sitting around doing nothing.

This is episodic arrythmia (abnormal heart rythmn)

The commonest causes are 1. caffeine 2. stress 3. idiopathic etc.etc.

You should consult your doctor/cardiologist for a complete physical and the relevant investigations like an EKG, Echo and ,if necessary a Holter monitoring. These will determine the exact type of arrythmia and dictate the exact management and advice, if it is not innocent.

Best of Luck.

Alot of people experience these palpitations. Sometimes caffeine, cold products with pseudaphedrine, chocolate, will do it to people. Stress, fatigue, and sometimes people just get them. Most are not dangerous. some are. If you had any symptoms with them: Short of breath, dizzy, chest pain, you ought to go to ER. You could call your doc, (don't know your age) it could be pertinenet info they'd want to know about. They can catch it on a routine EKG sometimes, but most of the time you need a halter moniter. Types of fluttering people feel are : PVC's=premature ventricular contractions:::Atrial Fibrilation or Flutter::: PAC's -most common-Premature Atrial contraction-not dangerous unless a bunch come in a row. Sometimes people can have heart valve problems that create this feeling.

There are several reasons food drinks and meds are a contributing factor, but there are several arrhythmia's like Atrial fibrillation, Ventricular Fibrillation, sinus tachycardia and several others. I personally have A-fib. It does not always cause a problem for everyone who has it, but if it is coming frequently, you should get checked out by a Dr. When your heart is in A-fib, the blood sits in the atria and spins and puts you at risk for a blood clot. I take meds daily, including an anti coagulant that keeps the clot time of my blood regulated based on my specific condition. Again, you should definitely talk to your Dr.

There are lots of reasons for palpitations. My MD told me that most people get them all the time but can't feel them. He said the reason it is so alarming is because you can feel them. If you are concerned have it checked. I used to get them with PMS, too much caffeine, some other kin ds of meds. If it puts your mind at rest get it checked... Thanks!
