Nifty 50's For the invitations, cut out a music note from a piece of black paper, then, with the same design, cut a smaller musical note out of tin foil and tape it on. With a marker, write on the front: "Come Join (your name) for a Rockin'& Rollin'Good Time!" You will want a big room for your party, so go out and see if you can rent a Country Club near you, or if you are on a smaller budget, a basement in your home, a nearby party shop, or maybe even your child's school cafetirea or gym. You will need a large dance floor, so move the tables and chairs to the side or to another room or a storage area. If you are lucky enough to have one, or if you rented out your school cafetirea, a stage is very nice to have for a kareoke machine and a stereo system. To decorate a room, you can use two of the most popular 50's colors: black and pink. Have black and pink streamers, balloons, and even gossamers or sheet rolls of colored paper. Cut out poodle silohettes, musical notes, and records sut from black paper and dangiling from the celing. For the tables the kids will eat at, have red and white checkered tablecloths over tables and record centerpieces and confetti. Have tons and tons of 50's music. For boys, have a table with hair gel and black combs and infaltable guitars. For gilr, have a talbe with fingernail polish with charms (if possible), and scarves and retro sunglasses. Let the kids dance. Have hoola hooping contests, dance contests, and best costumes for boys and girls. If possible, have a bar serving burgers, shakes, french fries, and hotdogs. If you can't have a bar, ask friends and neighbors or teens dress in "soda pop girl" outfits, and skate the orders to the tables. For prises, have elvis and beehive wigs, stick on nails, fedora hats, and retro sunglasses. The party favors are what the kids win or get from the tables, and their pictures of them dancing.

The 50's have lots of wonderful themes you could run with, depending on what Dad likes! From poodle skirts & greasers and the dawn of Rock'n'Roll, through the more sophisticated 'Rat Pack' style, to the avante garde Beatniks.. the 50's had lots of fun stuff going on! Check out rat pack and beatnik on wikipedia for a start.

There are so many great 50's songs in different styles, so dancing should be no problem! Tape some old TV shows like Lucy and Leave it to Beaver and have them playing silently for atmosphere. Get a Hula Hoop to try :)

Serve some popular drinks from the 50's.. regular martinis, manhattans, highballs and some retro foods (that are still darn tasty!) like devilled eggs, jellied salad, sausage rolls, celery stuffed with cheez whiz (a 50's era biggie, cheez whiz was new!).

Your 50's party can be as lively and loud or as sophisticated as you like.. or a medley of both! I think Dad will have a great time.. don't forget to find some pics of him from that era if he's that old!
