I think they are fennel seeds - sometimes coated with sugar. Yeah i love them too. You could just chew them and swallow it. but I normally just chew it to get the flavor and spit it. it is also an important ingredient for some indian currys - like korma...I love Indian food...:)

My experience is that they are anise or fennel seeds. Do they taste like licorice? If so, it's anise or fennel seed. They are small and look a little like caraway (of rye bread fame).
Cardamom are pods and look closest to lemon seeds.
If it's anise/fennel, then you do not need to spit out anything.
If it's cardamom, then you are NOT supposed to swallow. Just chew on them and then spit out. However, I really doubt that's it.

It's a "mukhvas" (mouth-freshner) .. it is indeed cardamom and it's to help 1. help your breath and 2. help digest your food. We let it rest in your mouth like a mint, by then the husk softens, you chew the pods and spit out the skin.

You can do what you like, just like in India! :)
I break open the skin and eat the seeds, and throw away the skin and white bits. The little black seeds are edible and help calm digestion, there's no need to spit those out.
They're cardamoms usually.

It's called "paan" and it's given out the way other restaurants give mints.
It's usually a combination of fennel seeds, some candied pieces, rock candy and maybe a few other herbs.

If it really is a eating position you sense tender asking in, see if between the employees can allow you to comprehend which dishes have sugar interior the sauce. anybody that does no longer that consists of fowl or goat will be superb. lots of the vegetarian dishes (extraordinarily with lentil) that do not have sugar interior the sauce will be reliable recommendations besides. from time to time you could also get the chef to make you some thing without sugar in case you tell them you're diabetic or eat low carb!
