Always get a second opinion and the need to check his heart first and foremost. My father was told he needed knee replacements and shoulder replacements, and I just don't believe that this one doctor is right. He had several doctors and thank God the VA doctor said he needed to have his heart checked, because they took him straight to the hospital during his test for a quadruple bypass and this has been almost 2 years ago and they still want release him for the knee surgery. Because of his heart and he will not listen to these doctors that have saved his life. It depends on there health and if they listen to what the doctors tell them. Does he keep his diabetes under control? If he does not try to keep Diabetes under control he will not heal and if he has any heart problems this could take his life all this needs to be taken into consideration. They want pull my tooth , because I found out i was diabetic 3 days before and they wanted me to make sure it was going to be under control before they did that simple procedure , so this is a serious thing to go under the knife when your diabetic. You need to go to the doctor with him and ask questions and write them down before you go so you don't forget anything. The reason for a second opinion is for an instance I have had surgery happy doctors that operated and I have had more problems since the surgery than before and I woke up in ICU with no explaination and found out a year later I died on them. They voluntered no information until I kept prying and then they didn't tell me everything, it came out between other surgeries when the one who put me to sleep told me he remembered me because he had to bring me back my heart had stopped . I didn't sue the hospital or the doctor, but I lived through h@ll since that day and do you think they care I was only 38 then now at almost 45 the problems are still there and I'm worse. In all areas. So tell your father to becareful with his health and who his doctor is. the doctors stick to gather and they cover it up if something happens.

First of all, your dad should get a second opinion. If he is a very well controlled diabetic, then he should do ok. If he isnt, then he could get an infection in the incision area. It can be fatal.

If he has an endocrinologist, then he should confer with them too. The endo and the ortho doctor should work together on this.

Goodluck and God bless!

the diabetes shouldn't have anything to do with his ability to have surgury, although some diabetics are slow to heal. As long as the surgeons know exactly what medications he takes, if any, he should be fine. Pain can make your blood sugar rise (due to stress) and affect your blood pressure too, so surgury might be very beneficial for him- to fix the shoulder and eliminate potential other related issues.

If he is in otherwise good physical health, and his immune system is strong enough, I don't see why not. If the soldier is interfering with his daily activities and quality of life, then I would definitely go for it, as long as the doctors think that he'd make it through the surgery.

Here for help? No one here can advise you on this. He needs to talk to his surgeon and the doctor who manages his diabetes to talk about risks. You don't mention if his diabetes is under control, if he is insulin dependent, etc.
