You have to keep your carbohydrates lower. Eat only whole grains. Limit fruits. Eat lots of fresh and cooked vegetables. Eat fish. You already know that u cannot eat sweets. Also eat foods rich in magnesium. Karelas are good for sugar. Also methi danas are great.
In fruits the best fruit is a guava. eat a guava for fruit instead of oranges and banannas. You eat a bananna, when your sugar is low. Diabetics have fluctuations in sugar levels. When u feel really weak, you may have low sugar.

This really is a question you need to ask your doctor. If you are diabetic you must be going for weekly if not monthly monitoring to keep close watch on your glucose level. My parents are both diabetics, and my father is insulin dependant. He eats only sugar free foods except for certain times when the glucose is to low and he needs some orange juice or a hard candy to level out. Also, stay away from high carb food, since carbs turn into sugar. But the most important thing you can do is talk to your doctor or a nutritionist. Also, be very careful of your feet. Blood flow is not that good in diabetics and if you get a sore on your foot, it may not heal properly and become very infected. Your doctor should ask to see your feet at every visit. Good luck.

Which Type Do you have though? Because it Depends.

Listen to other diabetics, doctors, or nutritionists. Cause usually other people get confused and refer diabetes to overintake of sugar.

What matters is how much insulin you are taking so you can determine how much you eat (For Type One, I am Type One :] I don't know about Type Two though). Just count the carbs. Buy a Carb Book from a bookstore for help. It depends on what your nutritionist limits you or if you have the pump then there is no limit (From what I've heard from doctors). I have to eat a certain amount at certain times. Fiber doesn't matter really you just have to subtract it from your food and therefore have to eat more anyways. So yeahh :] Type 1 of course. Not Type 2. Type 2 is when you make insulin but can't control it, so it might be different.

The list seems to be changing all the time, from one clinic to the next. While some nurses forbid you to eat chocolate or anything sweet, I was also told that if you really wanted a piece of chocolate, don't deny yourself it. One or two pkts of potato chips/crisps per week are OK, and no more than 3 eggs. I use Candrel instead of sugar. Don't be fooled into buying special diabetic foods. They contain fructose, higher content of fat, and are really expensive. Diabetic chocolate gives many people stomach cramps and diarrhea. No more than 3 pieces of fruit per day. It used to be 5, but it was changed when it was discovered how much natural sweetness the fruit holds. Grapes and raisins are a definite NO. They send your blood sugar level sky high. There's so many foods you can't eat, it's impossible to list everything. Basically, cut right down on fats and sugar, and you learn as you go along. Don't try and cram all the information or follow the diet to the letter. You only end up depressed. Good luck

I am writing to tell you what an incredible impact these methods had on my life! I have had type 2 diabetes for 27 years. For me, the worst part of this horrible disease is the severe pain I constantly get in my feet. The pain is so bad that I avoid standing and walking as much as possible. I recently had a similar problem. My cat nearly died as her kidneys began shutting down. Good news is that we rehydrated her and got her better and we also had a prescribed food recommended, which of course she didn't want. She kept going the box of the old food that was still there for the other cats in the house. Our vet told us to add one or two pieces of her old food to the new food. Once their appetite is stimulated they will usually eat some of whatever is being offered. It worked. She now eats the new food exclusively and actually turns down the old. You might try the same thing. One or two pieces shouldn't hurt. My father is diabetic and he still eats his sweets, in moderation. He says that sometimes you just need to encourage your stomach.

Diabetes is a disease condition where the body is not able to utilise the free sugar in the blood. High sugar level cause extensive damage to the body parts/tissues. Hence it is desirable to maintain constant sugar levels. Avoid foods which spike sugar levels like beverages, refined foods, sweets, tea, coffee and even ripe fruits like mango, banana, chiku etc. High fibre foods, complex carbohydrates release sugar over a period of time and maintain relatively better sugar levels. Green leaves, vegetables, whole grains etc. are recommended. Avoid fats and oily foods. Do regular exercises.

As a general rule- anything white- sugar, pasta, bread, rice, should be used very sparingly. But it's very much a YMMV (your mileage may vary) issue- some people can eat watermelon without a problem, but other people eat it and their BS goes thru the roof. So you keep a food diary and use your meter to test, test, test, and track the results and make a list that suits YOUR body.
