You could try steaming and mashing in cereric - this will give a very pleasant taste with added butter and fresh ground black pepper. Or try cooked and mashed carrots or make bubble and squeek by steaming sprount or cabbage and adding to the the mash and frying in butter and oil plus black pepper. Dont forget to let is go cold before you fry it or else the steam from the cooked potatoes takes a while to evaporate.

Go all the way and make shepherd's Pie.
Brown any ground meat, season it, and spread it in a casserole dish. Layer the meat with a variety of veggies, carrots, cabbage, green beans, peas, anything you like. Cover the veggies with gravy (sometimes I just buy the gravy in the jar). Then top it off with your mashed potatoes that can be plain and simple, or add any of the various offerings you've read so far. Pop the casserole in the oven for approx. 35 minutes at 325 degrees. It is heavenly, and a one-dish meal your family will love!!!!

Mash some swede/turnip in too. Add A little milk and butter. Or you could also add some cooked leeks and bacon to plain mash.
My mum would grate some raw carrot and add a few peas and stir in some mayonnaise or salad cream. Its really tasty and great with cold chicken or ham and salad

Wow -- high quality answers!! But I'd add other root vegetables -- only use one or two with a ratio of more potatoes (say, in volume, six to one) -- turnips, parsnips, rutabagas, or carrots. Then roasted garlic -- love it -- I might leave out the potatoes and just serve whipped roasted garlic!! I might be kidding!

The simple answer is anything you like! Try experimenting by adding just a little onion or cheese etc. to a small portion. I love roast garlic or the chopped stalks of broccoli and cauliflower (I don't like the texture of florets)and used to mash vegetables like carrot and turnips into potatoes to introduce the taste to my children.
