Uh, yes yes yes. Long term bronchodilator use shortens a person's life span if used improperly, that's why they needed to come up with other inhaled steroids and adjunctive medication. Salbutamol accelerates heart rate and pushes your electrolytes around the place a bit, and the way it works is by forcing the smaller muscles around the airspaces in your lungs to dilate against their will. Makes you breathe better, but there's a reason why it's symptomatic treatment only.

Everything you put in your body has side effects. EVERYTHING! Even water, the more water you drink, the more you will have to use the restroom. That's the side effect. Now if he is taking a medication for a condition he doesn't have, he is putting a chemical (with side effects) into the body for no reason.

That said, the cigarette is worse then the the puffer. Cigarettes will significantly shorten life. I can't understand why someone would smoke a cig (hurts breathing) then take a puffer/mdi that is supposed to help breathing. If the person would quit smoking, he may not need the puffer. Then he would not have side effect from any of them.
