A high cholesterol level, per se, does not cause any symptoms or signs of any disease.

The problem arises when, given time, the persistently high level of cholesterol starts to deposit in irreversible plaques in crucial arteries e.g. coronary arteries , cerebral arteries etc.

These plaques start to embarass the blood flow in the arteries to their respective organs and gradually lead to complications that may have fatal outcome.

The only time for not determinining the cholesterol level is in young slim individuals with a healthy lifestyle, and no negative
family history.

Best Wishes

Cholesterol is a test which gives you several answers all at once.If you havent had a complete physical in a while, it is a good idea to have what you would call a baseline routine test.
The doctor will not only order a cholesterol level but the subgroups of cholesterol.
This web site will explain it better.

You just answered your own question. "Apparently healthy"..there you go. No one knows just by looking at someone if they are healthy or not. Perfectly healthy looking people drop dead all the time from undiagnosed problems. Heart disease and stroke to name just two. These events, heart related problems and stroke are both contributed to by the amount of cholesterol in the arteries. So, this is why it is important for everyone including young people, to be screened for high cholesterol.
Make sense?

Because even an apparently healthy person can have a heart attack. I knew someone in apparently great health who fell over at work from a heart attack and died at age 42, no warning.
