In asthma, inflammation of the bronchi and spasming of the smooth muscle around the bronchi leads to narrowing of the airways and air trapping in the lungs, making breathing out very difficult. That would be the most common reason bronchi become narrowed, however other things that can obstruct bronchi include masses like tumours or granulomas.
