First stop the SALT and go to NO Salt or salt substitute. For many people flirting with high blood pressure this works.
I was that way for MANY years. They told me I was probably going to be diabetic when I was a teenager. I stayed it remembering what Margaret Mead said about primative peoples -they do not have a diet that has refined sugar and they have a lot less diabetis.
Keep away from SUGAR - all kinds - limit to 30 grams a meal carbs - limit fructose.
Hope that helps. I have been chubby most of my life and I stayed diabeties from 16 to 60. Now yup I am planning on NOT going on insulin and doing more.
Best wishes to you

Borderline diabetics, aka pre-diabetics, are just diabetics who haven't quite gotten out of control... just yet. If you want to avoid taking shots, you're in the perfect position to get control over this if you act right now. I was in that same spot five years ago and I ignored my doctor. I'm lucky, I just have to take a little pill twice a day. Get the book: "The Diabetes Improvement Program" by Patrick Quillin which I recommend on my diabetes info page: http://www.geocities.com/seabulls69/Type_II_Diabetes.html

I think you've confused 'trying to eat better' with 'trying to eat the same way, with fewer calories and less fat and sugar' and this cannot be done (as you noticed).
Why not throw out your current diet, and start over?
Go to the grocery store, and buy poultry, fish and low-glycemic index fruits and vegetables that are natural, unprocessed and in their original forms. Cook them simply (or not at all) and eat them in small meals several times a day.
If your current diet revolves around treats (ice cream = frozen yogurt) make fresh fruit smoothies with nonfat unsweetened PLAIN yogurt and fresh pineapple or strawberries and blueberries.
If you currently eat commercially produced bread, with all its claims and pitfalls, stop. Make bread yourself with stone-ground whole wheat flour in a bread machine, or ignore bread in favor of lettuce leaves to wrap around your tuna sandwiches.
Who needs to spend hours poring over labels, trying to figure out if the ingredients are good or bad? Don't buy things to eat with labels of ingredients. A bag of apples has no ingredients list; neither does a bunch of broccoli or cauliflower.
Use lots of vinegar or lemon juice in your salads for dressing (again, no lists of ingredients to worry about) and try to keep a food diary so you can keep track of the best/worst food/blood sugar interactions, which can be different for different people, by the way.
I rely on a snack of apple slices, whole wheat crackers (from a farmer's market) and cheddar cheese one or two times a day to keep my blood sugar level steady. I've learned that pepperoni pizza agrees with my system (for some reason) and that cheeseburgers don't--no matter what the bread content.
Treat your situation as a journey in food discoveries, not a problem, and you should be quite happy.
Good luck!

just watch what you eat and drink. remember, also that foods with low fats and sugar free can deceive you. Because these types of foods are much higher in calories and carbs. You can eat them, but moderately. don't forget to eat more fruits and vegetables, plus drink plenty of water. Also do some exercise, at least a 30 minute walk at the park. Take care of yourself, right now that its in borderline.
