I made up a game for a party that was really fun (but you have to be in a goofy mood). It was called "wheel of jeopardy". It was like wheel of fortune, where people picked letters in a phrase or title, but instead of getting points for getting things right, you got punished (the jeopardy part) for getting a letter wrong. To see how you were punished, I made some big dice and you rolled them and did what it said on the top, like "walk like a chicken", "sing a TV show theme", "burp out loud", etc. If you guessed the word/phrase, you got to make up the phrase for the next round.

It really depends on that kind of people you are trying to keep entertained. If it's a busines event it could be rough trying to keep a level of professionalism but you could do something like fondue or a chocolate fountain as people tend to congrigate around them and entertain themselves as they graze. Playing cards are always useful at such events as are board games or casino games. My mother purchased a hand held doo dad called 20 Q which I took to a holiday gathering and it ended up being quite entertaining. If you think they are going to be a difficult crowd to keep occupied then just give them plenty of alcohol, that should lighten them up a bit. Good Luck!!

have a little questionaire about the people who you have invited (i am assuming they all wont know each other) and give hints about people like ____ drives a BMW or _____only drinks merlot.
this will encourage your guests to get to know one another and be an ice breaker amongst them. or have a murder dinner party like the game clue but better cause you make it all up and then have your guests figure out the mystery.
