They test for abnormal cells. No, they do not test for STDs unless you request it. They are separate tests. A pap will only tell you if the cells are pre-cancerous/cancerous or not. If you want STD testing, you need to see your doctor and tell him/her what your sexual contact has been so they can do the appropriate testing.

Pap smears make sure that everything is okay down there and that there is no abnormal functions going on. I received my results back this past October and found that my pap was abnormal. They did a couple more detailed pap smears and detected that I had theHPV virus. Nothing major right now because I caught it in the early stages. So yes, they do catch diseases.

A pap smear tests for cervical cancer. The practitioner may want to also include an STD test depending upon your age, sexually activity, and signs such as itching or vaginal discharge.
Pap smear and STD tests are different lab tests.

normally, cells from the cervix get exfoliated and dropdown. a study of these cells is known as pap smear- short for papanicolou smear , It is performed by scraping the cells from the cervix by a spatula- a quite painless procedure-- and fixed with a fixative immediately and the slide studied under the microscope. it is reported negative when no abnormal cells are found. when abnormal cells are found the report may be :be1. benign ,-notn-cancerous cells 2, precancerous - cells that show a tendenceny to turn cancerous lateron and 3, frankly cancerous /malignant cells are reported. the papsmear is a very useful tool to detect cervical cancer in its precancerous stage.as cancer cervix is notorious for remaining silent for many years,. and early treatment can be initiated. with great success. .
this test is not for detecting STD but a study of the report , if it is inflammatory, can suggest pelvic infection.
