I have been researching genetically modified foods for the past few days, and had no idea about them before now. I recently read that 90 percent of SOY consumed in the US, has been so extensively modified that it can no longer even be considered soy. Originally, it was modifed with a gene made from pesticide to make it resistant to the pesticide sprayed on. Then, it was further modified with wheat and corn, making it toxic for people allergic to wheat or corn. Then, it was modified with SCORPION VENOM to make it more resistant to pests. This is happening with corn, wheat, cabbage, and other veggies. If this practice continues, what will the future hold for our children? Will they be able to obtain fruits, veggies, and grains in their natural form? I find it disturbing and wanted some outside input. I have an open mind, and am willing to consider all opinions. Maybe I just need some perspecti

This means that most tofu and meat substitutes that most vegetarians rely on is toxic, and a danger to those of us with food allergies.

No, I'm not frightened by genetically modified foods at all.
Genetically modified foods have genes from other organisms inserted into them for many reasons. For example, many foods are genetically modified to make them more nutritious or easier to grow. These foods are completely harmless.
When an organism has DNA from a different organism, it is said to be "recombinant", and recombinant organisms exist in nature- naturally.
Also, genetically modified food is deemed safe by the FDA. Manufacturers submit a lot of documentation to the FDA to prove their product is safe.
People have been genetically modifying crops for centuries, and crops modified using GM techniques are less likely to have unintended changes than conventionally bred crops.

I, too, am loathe to eat anything GMO. In fact, many people I know, myself included, go to great lengths, traveling to distant markets, making an organic garden, and reading labels, visiting innumerable web sites, studying and reading, paying high prices, anything to avoid eating GMOs for the following reasons:

No one can say with any certainty that Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) are not harmful. Why? Because there has never been a controlled study or clinical trial using humans. Those trials on animals have not been encouraging. (Some trials have been done - the few reports I have seen have not been encouraging, even those from the GMO producing company - rare, indeed, to see a report at all from them.)

For 10 years now, yes, we have been unknowingly eating GMOs, but just look how many sick people there are in the world. How many of the people you know that take NO prescription drugs. How many people come down with sudden and unknown, and new illnesses. In this day and age, we should have fewer sick people, not more! That's not to say it should be blamed on GMOs.....but we simply don't know.

Prevention is the key, as illness only lines the pockets of Pharmaceutical companies, the same companies who produce GMOs. Monsanto is a key player, and profit is the bottom line of any Multinational. Their Board of Directors don't make our health their first priority. That is our job!

Many of our insect populations are dying off. Now it is the honeybee. Einstein once said that when the bee goes, we will go a few years after. No one knows the reason the bees are dying. Who's to say it's not the systemic pesticides used for GMOs.

(Just a not here, the reason behind GMOs is largely to provide a usage for the chemicals produced by such as Monsanto.)

This is a subject that is well worth everyone's taking the time to look up for themselves. Make the time. Think of your children. What is more important than the food we eat and the air and water. If those things get cleaned up, fewer people would become ill. That is a no brainer. It is up to us to talk about this and make sure our government representatives know our fears. Then put your money where you know it will do the least harm. Yes, it's hard, but it's worth it in the end.

Until several controlled human feeding trials are recorded and published by independent researchers, I will keep eating organic. At least that will cut out many pesticides, chemicals, antibiotics, etc. Bon appetit!

Yes, Beebs, I'm terrified!

Even when you try your best to go organic and buy only non GMO, there is a risk of cross pollination.

Genetic engineering is the number one reason our fruits and veggies are no longer exported. Genetic tampering with foods is banned across the ocean. We consider ourselves so high and mighty. But we are killing ourselves.

The worst one for me was when I discovered they were trying to splice animal genes to tomatoes to give it a "will to live."

TOTAL science fiction! But that's exactly what they are doing. Check out the link below.

Our bodies are simple machines. They are programmed to take apart food the way God designed it. Our bodies have NO CLUE what to do with genetically modified food. Hence all the food allergies, cancer and obesity problems.

Why engineer corn to have poison in it when natural farming works better? Done properly it has better results than commercial farming of engineered produce! Poison is poison. How can anyone tell us it's harmless?

insanity I tell you.

Lets not forget the High Fructose Corn Syrups which is a genetically modified sugar substitute. I have experimented a little with it and seem to feel better without it. Every soft drink in the USA except for diet has it. I went to other countries and they use real sugar in thier Coke. Have you ever noticed that ever since HFCS came into the picture in the early 1970's, people are getting fatter and fatter and fatter.......?

First of all genetically altering food has little to do with toxicity! Your perfectly safe to eat any of these fruits and vegetables! You have been eating them for many years and never gave it a thought! Just where do you think seedless grapes and tangelos came from? They came from genetic research! If you were to look into it in more detail you would be shocked as to the number of things that we eat and use everyday have already been genetically altered! There is no need to fear ,our food supply is better and more plentiful than ever thanks to genetics....!

The only way to be safe is to grow it yourself or eat organic stuff. And that is really scary that people are doing that to food. Have faith that there are good people watching over those doing experiments.
