That is a very personal decision that you need to make on your own after serious thought and consideration.

There are very good reasons to become a vegetarian. If you maintain a balanced diet it's actually better for your health, as meat contains a lot of saturated fats (bad for your heart) and fish often has high mercury levels. If you don't believe me, you'll believe this quotation: "It is the position of the American Dietetic Association and Dietitians of Canada that appropriately planned vegetarian diets are healthful, nutritionally adequate, and provide health benefits in the prevention and treatment of certain diseases."

Secondly: animal cruelty. Seeing chickens at a farm where they are bred only to be slaughtered made me become a vegetarian. They don't develop normally because they're being fed hormones and grow abnormally fast, so can't walk. All they do is lie on the floor making awful sounds, clearly suffering. I hated the sight!

And then there's the environment and global warming. Animal agriculture leads to high levels of methane emissions, which is a far more dangerous greenhouse gas than CO2.

Check these websites, and show them to your parents so they can join you!

i can only relate to you my story, i can't advise you what to do..a number of years ago, having gotten deeply involved in Taoism (a form of buddhaism) i found it impossible to eat animal flesh any more because i came to believe in reincarnation..who knew who that cow or fish might have been in a previous life?...i simply announced one day that i would no longer eat meat, and why, and fortunately everyone around me adapted...as the years went by i also finally grasped the understanding of karma...it is some animals' fate to eat, and some to be eaten...so long as you respect the sacrifice of the source doing what nature created us to do is no sin...but each person must find his or her own way with this...do what is in your heart, not what you think will please others...if people love you they will accept whatever you decide...enjoy your life

Do you want to go vegetarian? It is more than what you eat, it is the way you live. If you really believe in going vegetarian, go ahead. Tell your parents your decision. They do not have to like it, but they should understand that it is your choice.

I believe it is not a question of whether I, or any other answerer, thinks you should or not. Fact is, even the most perfectly worded influencial answer, written by a team of veg*ns slowly perfecting the argument for veg*nism over the decades, would most probably be read by you, the asker, with a grain of salt. What reason do you have to trust implicitly the opinions of complete strangers like us.
Fact is, you want one of two things, the two common motivations for questions like this.
1) your looking for people like us to support you decision to become veg*n, so to boost your self esteem before making the plunge your fearing taking.
2) your hoping no one intelligent will answer, that way you can justify not going veg*n and your life stays peachy.

Well I'm here to ruin your day (sorry), because I consider myself an intelligent person, and I'm going to write something soon that will either obliterate your fear of going veg*n or obliterate your justification of not going veg*n. The only option that is left is to go veg*n (happy days).

So this is your last chance to bail out, ingore the truth's to follow that you may find inconvenient, and continue living your wasteful, hipocritical, heartless lifestyle. Not that I'm saying there's anything wrong with living such a lifestyle. I am saying that every moment your alive you are choosing that lifestyle, the world that has been pulled over your eyes to blind you from the truth. It is also the way you choose for others to see you, regardless of who you really are inside, which I'm sure is compassionate, conservative and observant, with a mindset based on strong positive principles.

So, here are a few quick facts.

Factory farms pollute waterways more than all other industrial sources combined, cause 85% of all topsoil erosion, and produce 130 times the excrement of the entire human population.

There is no element or ingredient in any animal, dead or alive, that human beings are better off consuming, directly or indirectly, that cannot be obtained in more than sufficient quantities by being herbivorous. Heart disease and stroke are the 2 leading causes of death in developed countries, both of which are caused by unhealthy diets than all other causes combined. Meat eaters are over 600 times more likely to develop a potentially lethal disease, the most common of which include cancer, diabetes, and any of 1000 types of infection like the colon, kidney, liver, stomach, intestine, bowel, blood, and immunological.

The human digestive system is incapable of properly breaking down most animal products, meat in particular, which is why omnivors are often constipated, lethargic, and experience bowel, stomach and mucus gland movement after consumption. This inefficiency is increased when people consume meat without properly chewing the food, when eating highly processed meat, and/or when eating meat with an excess of oils, fats and acids included in the meal.

I don't want to go into the treatment that animals undergo from before birth to the moment they lose consciousness, which is often after the butcher has begun gutting the innocent organism of it's internal organs. If I do, the memory of watching it, in person with my own eyes, may provoke my throwing up on my keyboard. I've already said enough to be getting that feeling in my throat.

The work, as it's done in the USA, is almost always done by illegal immigrants, who will do anything to stay living in the land of the free. Some freedom: They are paid significantly less than the poorest american citizen to have ever lived, they live in cell block conditions, and their average working shelf life is less than 2 years before they are physically incapable of standing or shaking hands, much less working. They are labelled obsolete, and thrown out by the company like garbage.

So, Do you think you should go veg*n? remember, you opinion is the only one that matters, so don't ask me.

If yes, how do you break it to your parents? How did/would you tell your folks you have/had a lover? Or any other major decision you have ever had to announce to the people who care the most about you? This decision is no different, and so it should not be treated any different by you or anyone else, unless you choose to make it different. Do your parents work at a place that provides products or services that rely on the animal product industry for the survival of the business? yes or no, nothing has changed. Just be more careful how you word it when you tell them. They're not doing anything bad, merely excercising their right to choose to work in such a field.

And now the most important sentence of my entire answer: If you do choose to become veg*n, and the cost to your life or lifestyle is greater than the many benefits, you can choose to reverse your decision at ANY time. No if's, but's or maybe's about it. And that fact remains true for every veg*n who has ever lived, or will ever live. Every day of my life I wake up and consciously, intently choose to be veg*n with the same determination and resolve as the day before. If that ever changes, my decision may change, and that's the nature of the universe!

Good luck helping yourself to live. I honestly and truly hope you find a way to be the person you wish to see in the world.
