Not exactly true.
The American Heart Association said in its 2005 Scientific Sessions that the thrill of roller-coaster rides can put people who have heart disease, have had a heart attack, have defibrillators or pacemakers, or have irregular heartbeat at risk. Healthy people have nothing to be afraid of. But for those with cardiac-related history, it can put them at risk of arrhythmia, heart attacks, or sudden death. Amazingly, the increased heart rate is not caused by the the G-force or the twists and turns and spins of the ride itself but because of the "psychological stress" - the anticipation or the fear of the ascents and drops.
The 2003 Blue Ribbon Panel Report of the Brain Injury Association of America also came out with a finding on the relation of brain injuries and roller coasters and they said that people with pre-existing conditions such as those with heart conditions, epilepsy, back or neck injuries, with prior orthopedic surgery, or are pregnant are warned against riding. It added that "the overwhelming majority of riders will suffer no ill effects." The acceleration levels of roller coasters are also well within human tolerance. The fastest roller coaster is recorded to have reached levels of 4.5 g's for 0.5 second while the lowest level of sustained acceleration at which blackout can occur is 5.5 g's for 0.5 second. The Blue Panel then concluded that the risk of brain injusty from a roller coaster "is not in the rides, but in the riders."
The same is logically true of watching a horror film - which is far less physically strenuous. Those with pre-existing heart conditions, or those who are pregnant or have heart or brain ailments are most likely to suffer from watching horror films. And it's not because of the film itself but because of the resulting psychological suspense or stress.
