Allergens need to make direct contact with the body for the reaction to take place. You can breathe them in, they can touch your skin, you can ingest them.. etc... Either way, if your body is hypersensitive to these allergens, your immune system will respond.

There is no simple way to explain the reaction, but it eventually leads to histamine release which causes all the symptoms you typically see with an allergic reaction

This is quoted from Wikipedia:

"Histamine, acting on H1-receptors, produces pruritus, vasodilatation, hypotension, flushing, headache, tachycardia, bronchoconstriction, increases vascular permeability, potentiates pain, and more. (Simons, 2004)
