Continue trying to clear your airway even if you think it's "too low" to cough up. There's not much you can do if you can't expel it. Liquids will be absorbed. Solid food can rot. Wait and see if it causes an infection when it decays.

It means the food goes down into your airway rather than your esophagus into your stomach.

If you have food in your airway that you cannot cough up go to the doctors. You could get an infection and it could turn serious. It could get into your lungs and food does not belong there! :~)

But usually, that's why you cough so hard...it's your body's reflex to expel it.

I would swallow my food the opposite way in that case. What kind of food is it? If it is something absorptive, like a cookie or cracker, just keep drinking fluids until it dissolves. If it's a chicken bone or something, then you should just stop eating chicken bones, then consult a physician.
