Hi,
A friend of mine is currently in Orange County, CA, Children's Hospital where her daughter who is 5 years old was suffering from Pneumonia which has now put her in a coma, she was braindead for 15minutes then started breathing again but the doctors are saying today the 5th day she is in a coma, that there's nothing more they can do for her to turn her machines off and let her die. I'm sure there is someone out there that can DO something for little KC I've heard of so many stories of doctors helping and patients especially children recovering from the same condition. Please someone out there if you know where we can take KC or get another opinion of someone who wants to try to help her get better please please help us.

She is located in California, Orange County.

Kindest of Regards

Lois

I'm sorry to hear about your friend's child. Children are remarkably resilient; they can pull through some pretty awful illnesses and accidents, occurences adults would not survive.

However, being without oxygen for 15 minutes (in other words, it sounds as though she did not breathe for those 15 minutes) causes irreversible brain damage. The brain can be retrained after injury and trauma, depending on where the damage is. However, this instance doesn't seem to indicate that possibilty. After that long a period without oxygen, the parts of the brain necessary to sustain life die off. There is no repairing them or no possibility of the damage being repaired by the body itself.

If the doctors are saying there is nothing they can do for her, they have most likely done EEGs to determine the functioning of the brain. The mother should ask to see the reports from those EEGs. The requirement to turning off all machines used to be 3 esentially flat EEGs; I don't know if that still holds true, or what the policy is for that particular hospital system.

Wish I could offer you some hope, but if she truly was not breathing and not being ventilated for 15 minutes, and was not a victim of drowning or of very low body temperature, she has no hope for recovery. I'm sorry.

Your're sure about the 15 minutes of brain death? That is a big statement. If that is correct, they should let her go. That is difficult to say, and more difficult to do. The Doctors are correct in their diagnosis.
I realize God can work miracles, let Him, remove the child from the machine. He will work a miracle, either heal the child or take the child home to be with him. He is true and reliable.
Also, California has some of the best doctors and hospitals in America.
My heart and prayers are with the child and your friends.

I'm sorry to hear this. While I have no solution, I remember my sister suffering from pneumonia around that age although she didn't go into a coma. She was in the ICU for a very long time but she survived and she's fine now, she's 16.

I know this doesn't help but I just said this to try and make you feel better. I'll look on the net and let you know, and I'll pray for that child.
And please ask her parents NOT to give up on her, there's just got to be some way.

what makes you think that the doctors there would not have done everything they could to save this child? I can't imagine anything any worse than losing a child. But doctors can only do so much.15 mins without oxygen to the brain is going to be hard to over come. I say that all any of us can do is pray and that's what I intend to do. May god bless little KC and her family and all who love her. And my god bless the team of medical professionals who I'm sure have tried their very best and I'm sure are devastated at the out come as well.
