If you received a root canal, a crown is really the only thing a dentist can put on that tooth. There may be different types of crowns (gold, stainless steel, porcelain) that your dentist could place, and those differ in cost, but a crown is what you need to prevent that tooth from fracturing after the root canal.

A crown goes fully over your tooth, your tooth is filed down, or they could do a post crown where a tiny post is screwed into your root and the crown is stuck over the top. A veneer, just covers the front, like for cosmetic purposes, Veneers do a different job than a crown, if he says its a crown you need, a veneer would be no good for what you need.
