Increase the thermodynamic engine efficiency (carnot engine efficiency) of internal combustion engines. This can be done by increasing the compression ratio.
Increase the real engine efficiency of IC engines so that their efficiency approaches the carnot cycle - adiabitc reversible cycle. This can be done by minimizing heat loss and friction in piston cylinder/bearings, etc.
Do not use diesel engines. Although their efficiency is usually superior to that of similar output Otto cycle engines, the products of combustion of diesel fuels are more damaging to the environment than those produced by Otto cycle engines.

The first and most imp is not to cut trees.We should use vehicles only when absolutely necessary otherwise either walk or cycle down to nearby places -it keeps u fit too -use public transport or car pools.Try to lead simpler lives so that factory production levels come down.Burning of plastic causes a lot of air pollution.Bursting fire crackers is another cause.Increase in overall world population is another main cause.More people - more needs!

Growing more trees in big numbers.
Transportation :
Use fuel efficient cars.
Use public transportation.
Bicycles are the best modes of commute as they are pollution free (no exhaust)

Growing trees does not prevent air pollution.
The absorption of carbon dioxide and the production of oxygen is carried out by algae in the oceans !!!
Better and smaller vehicles.

Tree's are number 1#, although it is a common misconception that we are losing tree's...not so, there are more tree's in the U.S. than from the time of Columbus

use better means of transport like solar powered cars or buses not diesel or petrol tanked cars. stop destroying rainforest's and logging projects
