FAA requirement - you have to be able to see flight attendants & exits in the event of a crash. FLight crews also need to know the situation outside an aircraft following a crash - IE need to know it there is a firs under their chosen escape path .. Oh - flight attendants are highly trained good looking, friendly do everyhting people .. they are there for your safety - no other reason - they stand between you and the pearly gates when things go wrong..

As a pilot and former flight attendant, window shades are supposed to be open for taxi, take-off and landing. The reason, as "fatguy" stated, is so you (and the flight attendants) can:

-see when the lights go out due to the failure of the electrical system in the event of a crash (the airplane doesn't always break into pieces)

- see outside to determine the safety of the evacuation route
and exterior conditions.

Flight attendants aren't just there for your comfort and to bring you drinks. They are trained to evacuate the airplane in an emergency. And if you are sitting in an exit row, don't be rude when the F/A asks you if you know you are sitting in an exit row and if you know how to use the exit and if you will assist in an accident. Those three "stupid" questions are required by the FARs (federal air regulations)

You don't have to. It has nothing to do with the landing gear what so ever. Who ever told you this, was having a good laugh at your expense. Laptops, cell phones yes, they will interfere with radar and landing instruments. Not the window shutters. lol ha ha ha

Not sure, but maybe it's so the passengers can see the runway and don't get too much of a shock when the plane hits the tarmac
