i am am mechanic, and am alowed to use my tools, uniforms and boots as deductions, the people around me say you deduct from state not fedral. why is that. i live in PA if that matters any

The people around you are wrong.

Tools you need to do your job, boots, uniforms, shop rags, and anything else that's necessary for you to do your job is deductable on your Federal taxes.

Fill out IRS Schedule A (if you're filing taxes on a 1040 form) to take these deductions.

Talk to a tax advisor for more information.

As long as you spent more than 2% of your income on your unreimbursed employee expenses, you COULD deduct it on a Schedule A. Your total "Itemized Deductions" (the total of everything on the Schedule A) must be more than your standard deduction in order to use it. Here is the link to IRS.
